DANVILLE FINISHES WITH BIG WINAugust 31, 2010

DBraves.com

DANVILLE, Va. - Just when you thought you'd seen it all this season, the Danville Braves had just one more trick up their sleeves tonight: handing the Burlington Royals a 12-0 thrashing.

Though it will be the Royals who take the Appalachian League East Wild Card as they hold the tie-breaker, the rivals finish with identical 34-34 records, as the Braves what would have been their first losing season in recent history.

After running into trouble last night with runners in scoring position, the D-Braves quickly put that memory to rest as they took a 5-0 lead before the first inning was out.

With the bases loaded and one out, a wild pitch by Burlington starter Leonel Santiago let in the first D-Brave run.

Up to bat for the first time as a D-Brave, catcher Cory Brownsten notched his first hit - a two-RBI double to put Danville on top 3-0.

Still not done, two more runs came across as first baseman Alberto Odreman singled and Kenny Fleming tripled, before the third out was recorded by the ninth batter.

Shut down in order in the second inning, the D-Braves struck again with another three tallies in the home half of the third to catapult them to an 8-0 lead.

The three spot came thanks to RBI singles by the red-hot Brownsten and Fleming, and an RBI ground out by second baseman and newcomer Fernando De Los Santos.

The other half of the story was much different tonight, as Kyle Farrell got the start on the hill for Danville, and proceeded to have his best performance of the 2010 season.

Through the opening three innings, Farrell allowed just two hits, while striking out three Royals. But it just got better from there, as he wracked up another five K's through his remaining two innings of work, including three consecutive whiffs in the fourth inning.

After giving up eight, seven earned, in three innings, Santiago was pulled for Burlington reliever Justin Mazur who stopped the bleeding through the sixth inning. In his opening three innings of work, Mazur gave up a lone hit, and struck out two batters.

But the D-Braves were not ready to let their fire be put out just yet, and threw another four on the board in the seventh.

With his second two-RBI double of the game, Brownsten put the Braves up 10-0. At the very next at bat, Odreman knocked in his second base runner of the game with his second double, and shortstop Matt Lipka recorded his first RBI as a D-Brave before the inning was out.

For the second straight night, the Braves got outstanding innings of relief courtesy.

Tonight's bullpen efforts were kicked off in the sixth by recently-promoted right-handed pitcher Dan Winnie. In his two innings on the mound, Winnie allowed just one hit and struck out a lone batter, before Matthew Suschak came into the game in the eighth, and faced just three batters in the eighth.

With a healthy 12-0 lead in the ninth, Edigson Mora closed out the game and allowed just one more Burlington hit to leave them with six on the night.

For starting the blanking of the Royals with his five-inning stellar start, Farrell got his fifth win of the season. His eight total strike outs were a season-most, and he rounds out the season with a 4.04 ERA.

For giving up eight runs on eight hits in the opening three innings, Burlington righty Santiago got just his third loss of the season. Closer Michael Giovenco was the only Royal pitcher not to allow any runs, as he finished the final 1.2 innings of the game.

While there were several offensive stars in the Danville line-up tonight, the most impressive performance by far was that of catcher Cory Brownsten.

When the game was out, Brownsten was 3-for-4, with three runs and five RBIs - the most by any D-Brave this season. Center fielder Kurt Fleming and infielder Odreman also had solid outings, going 3-for-5 and 2-for-4, respectively. The two contributed a combined three doubles, four runs and two RBIs.

Burlington first baseman Geoff Baldwin tallied the only extra base hit on the night for the Royals, and finished the night at 2-for-4 with a strike out.

D-BRAVES LOSS ENDS PLAYOFF HOPESAugust 30, 2010

DBraves.com

DANVILLE, Va. - The Danville Braves dropped its third-straight nail biter to the Burlington Royals tonight, 3-2.

The loss drops the Braves to 33-34 on the season, and they officially concede their Appalachian League East wild card spot to the Royals, who advance to just a game above .500 at 34-33.

Unlike the previous two games, Burlington was the first to strike, as they went after Danville southpaw starter Ronan Pacheco early on.

The Royals kicked off the first with back-to-back singles, before Pacheco induced three ground outs in a row. On the second slow roller, however, second baseman Luis Piterson was able to cross home for the first run.

Burlington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the very next round of at bats, as a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Alex Llanos and single by catcher Edul Escobar drove two more Royals base runners across home plate.

Quiet at the hands of Burlington starter Crawford Simmons, it took the Braves until the fifth inning to get onto the scoreboard in tonight's contest.

After stranding a pair in the first, and another duo in the third, Danville finally cashed in on having runners in scoring position in the home half thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly by shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

The Braves made it a game in the sixth as they narrowed the lead to a harrowing one run, courtesy of a bases-loaded golden opportunity. With Royals reliever JJ Leaper on the mound, Danville put two on before the first out was in the books.

Looking to hold the two-run lead, Burlington quickly yanked Leaper for lefty Claudio Bavera. Before the inning was out, however, the Braves had tacked on another tally on an RBI ground out by right fielder Jakob Dalfonso.

On the hill for Danville, relievers Stephen Foster and Chasen Shreve threw lights-out, and finally gave the team the closing innings that it has craved this season. Allowing just four additional hits, while giving up no more runs, and striking out a combined six batters. Unfortunately, the Braves could do no more damage with Burlington ace Robert Penny on the mound, and took the knock-out loss, 3-2.

Despite only giving up three runs, two earned, in his five-inning start, Danville's Pacheco was credited with tonight's loss. The marks came on six hits, and the lefty whiffed four. Burlington starting hurler Simmons got his sixth win for his own five innings of work, during which he allowed just one run on four hits, and struck out six D-Braves.

With a single in the seventh inning, Appy League All-Star shortstop Simmons extended his hitting streak to a personal season-long nine games, and finished the night at 1-for-3 with an RBI and walk.

Danville center fielder Keenan Wiley was also solid at the plate, going 2-for-4, and crossing home plate once during the contest. Burlington catcher Edul Escobar also went 2-for-4 on the night, knocking in a run and striking out twice.

The Danville Braves wrap up the season tomorrow night against the Burlington Royals at 7 p.m.

With the win tonight, the Burlington Royals have secured the second playoff spot in the Appalachian League East, regardless of the result of the fourth, and final game of the series.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:  DAN RIVER OPENS WITH WIN, E.C. GLASS, STAUNTON RIVER, GRETNA FALL

August 27, 2010

WSLS.com/sports

Staff Reports

It was the first time the Northside Vikings had taken the football field since they won a state championship last December, but they picked up right where they left off.

Thanks to razor-sharp passing from junior quarterback Adam Hardister, impressive kicking by Sean Joyner and balanced team play by its receivers, running backs and defense, the Vikings cruised past Jefferson Forest 34-12at Hickam Field.

Hardister completed 9 of 10 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns, his only miscues being an intentional grounding penalty in the first half and a pass that was broken up by the Cavalier defense in the third quarter. Joyner converted two first-half field goals of 40 and 41 yards, and narrowly missed another from similar distance in the second half.

Eleven Vikings carried the ball, with runners Tyler Fisher (eight carries for 54 yards), Ryan Bowden (7-55), and Jeremy Williams (10-41) leading the way.

Cavaliers coach Don Rice, a 1983 Northside graduate, was frustrated with his team's second-half performance, but attempted to put things in perspective.

Franklin County 28   E.C. Glass 21

ROCKY MOUNT - The Hilltoppers hung close with their former Western Valley District opponent, but couldn't get past the Eagles.

Lamont Hamlette had a breakout night for E.C. Glass, picking up 170 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Jordan Anderson had eight yards on eight carries and Mike Goins finished with 26 yards on six carries.

James Gaines returned three kicks for 73 yards for the Hilltoppers (0-1).

Cave Spring 41   Staunton River 21

In a battle of an untested offensive line against an attacking defense, Cave Spring took care of visiting Staunton River, 41-21, on Friday in the season opener for both teams.

Golden Eagles quarterback Cody Jones provided the offensive highlights, scoring on a 57-yard run in the first quarter and adding a 72-yard run in the third quarter. But it was a balanced Knight offensive attack that was the difference.

Cave Spring QB Josh Woodrum answered Jones' first score, hitting Austin Micklem for a 16-yard touchdown.

Then, after a Staunton River punt, Cave Spring scored on a 72-yard run that put the Knights ahead for good.

For the game, Jones was 3-for-12 passing for 13 yards he was the leading rusher, carrying the ball 11 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Dan River 21  Tunstall 7

Drew Wilson

RINGGOLD - Dan River running back Trey Edmunds waited patiently for his blockers as he rolled left.

Edmunds found the space he was looking for as he sprinted down the sideline for a 73-yard touchdown to help the Wildcats open the season with a season-opening 21-7 home victory over Tunstall on Friday night.

Dan River, which led 6-0 at the half, took advantage of two Tunstall mistakes and turned them into a pair of rushing touchdowns as they went ahead 21-0 through three quarters.

On Dan River's first possession of the second half, Tunstall (0-1) thought it had the stop it needed to gain momentum.

Tunstall's Peyton Farrior recovered a Dan River fumble, but the play was negated because of a facemask penalty on the Trojans.

A few plays later, Dan River converted a fourth-and-11, which helped set up an eventual 3-yard touchdown run by Justin Gunter.

After Tunstall's next drive stalled, Dan River got the ball on its own 27-yard line.

The Wildcats, who nearly had their first play picked off, turned to Edmunds, who rumbled down the field for the 73-yard score. He finished with 14 carries for a team-high 138 yards.

Tunstall answered with a 20-play, 88-yard drive that culminated with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Evan Huffman, which cut Dan River's lead down to 21-7 with 7:04 remaining.

Tunstall, however, couldn't get any closer. Dan River never gave the ball back as the Wildcats' ensuing drive drained the clock to zero.

Dan River wore Tunstall's defense down with its power running game, led by Edmunds, Gunter and Preston Fuller. The three combined for 33 carries for 226 yards.

 LCA 31   Gretna 0

GRETNA - In the last two weeks, Liberty Christian Academy has taken to the road to battle against the area's two pre-eminent prep football powers - Amherst County and Gretna.

The Bulldogs beat Amherst last Friday in a benefit game, opening the door for critics to say, "yeah, well it was just a scrimmage."

Friday night's game, though, wasn't a scrimmage. And for the full 48 minutes, the Bulldogs dominated Gretna in every aspect of the game, coming away with a 31-0 victory.

LCA has now played four times against public schools in the last three years and has won each time. And Friday's game was especially convincing, a total beatdown that showed the Bulldogs are ready to handle all local public school challengers.

With the game scoreless in the first quarter and Gretna driving inside the LCA 20, the Hawks' Darien Jefferson fumbled the ball on a hurried exchange from quarterback Nick Miller. LCA's Rennel Marshall recovered it.

"The momentum totally changed right there," Good said.

The Bulldogs rattled off an 18-play, 83-yard drive that lasted 8 minutes, 17 seconds, a slow march capped by Good's 29-yard TD pass to Lucas Smissen.

After the fumble, the Hawks got no further than the LCA 42. The Bulldogs outgained the Hawks 422 yards to 176 and had 19 first downs to Gretna's 10.

Saunders credited LCA's superior defensive line play as the main reason why the Hawks had so much trouble moving the ball.

Good threw for 247 yards and tossed three touchdown passes, two to speedy Bahamian receiver Demitri Knowles and another to Lucas Smissen.

Knowles' 44-yard TD reception less than two minutes into the second half put the game away, giving the Bulldogs a 24-0 lead.

Knowles finished with nine catches for 148 yards.

LCA, which entered the game with questions at tailback after Corey Harrington was removed from the team for disciplinary reasons, may have found an answer in Ronnie Stringfield.

A fourth-string running back who was expected to play defense, Stringfield ran for 122 yards on 17 carries. Kyri Washington started the game at tailback but was injured early.

Brookville 55   Martinsville 13

MARTINSVILLE - The Bees scored early and often as quarterback Kendall Becraft went completed 14-of-17 passes for 194 yards while throwing three touchdown passes.

It was the Bees' defense, however, that keyed an opening night victory. Martinsville managed 239 yards rushing, but was held to just four yards through the air, with one pass being intercepted by Brookville's Mark Boyd and returned 45 yards for a touchdown. Brookville's Ben Simmons rushed five times for 96 yards.

D-BRAVES PULL LATE RALLY FOR WINAugust 26, 2010

DBraves.com

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - What started off as a pitcher's duel became yet another landslide victory for the Danville Braves, as they toppled the Greeneville Astros, 7-2.

With the victory in the books, the D-Braves nab the series with the Astros for the first time this season, and improve to 33-30 on the season, though they remain three and a half games out of first place in the Appalachian League East.

The loss puts Greeneville at 29-32 on the season.

For the first time in the past two games, the Braves were not the first on the board, as the Astros hopped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a triple by Jonathan Merritt, and a wild pitch by Danville starter Kyle Farrell that brought the shortstop home.

The pair swapped tallies in the second inning, giving the Astros a narrow 2-1 lead. Danville jumped on the board to kick off their half thanks to an RBI single by right fielder Keenan Wiley, but the Astros retaliated quickly with an RBI sacrifice fly by designated hitter Chris Lovett.

With Greeneville on top by a single mark, Farrell and Astros starting hurler Michael Foltynewicz both found their groove on the mound, and proceeded to shut down opposing batters like clockwork.

After the third inning, Farrell gave up just two more hits through his remaining three innings of work. Foltynewicz was pulled after the fifth, after allowing just one run.

The D-Braves offense finally broke through in the sixth against reliever Garrett Bullock, as an RBI single by designated hitter Ryan Delgado evened the score at 2-2, and allowed Farrell to exit after the sixth with the deficit erased.

Having struggled in the late innings this season, and at 2-5 when tied after six, the D-Braves decided to show what they're capable of in eighth, as they put a four spot on the board. With two on and one out, Delgado reached on a force attempt, and the fielding error by new pitcher Ryan Cole, permitted two runs to score.

Not out of the woods yet, Cole got center fielder Jason Mowry to fly out, to put two outs in the books. But an RBI single by Wiley, and another fielding error gave the Braves the 6-2 advantage.

With relievers Chasen Shreve and Nate Russ on the mound to finish out the game, the Astros were held scoreless, and an additional D-Braves tally in the ninth handed the club its third-straight win, 7-2.

On the hill when the Braves stole the lead, Shreve was credited with his second win of the season, for his two innings of shut-out ball, during which he allowed just three hits and struck out four. Astros reliever Cole took the loss after giving up four runs, just one earned, on three hits.

For the third-straight night, the Braves offense could not be fooled, as Delgado led the pack once again, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Third baseman Barrett Kleinknecht also went 3-for-5, while notching three runs of his own. Four Astros had multi-hit games of their own, with infielder Jonathan Merritt finishing at 2-for-4, with a triple and a run scored. Lovett was credited with the lone Greeneville RBI.

The Danville Braves will go for the sweep of the Greeneville Astros tomorrow night, starting at 7 p.m. The D-Braves will then travel to Burlington for a two-game stint with the third-place Royals, in what will be a battle for the post-season.

After two in Burlington, the Braves return home to American Legion Post 325 Field to round out the regular season against the Royals on Aug.30-31.

BRAVES DRILL KINGSPORT 8-1August 24, 2010

DBraves.com

DANVILLE, Va. - It was a special night at American Legion Post 325 Field, as the surrounding community gathered to cheer on the Danville Braves, and to raise money for a local family in need - and the Braves did not disappoint.

In one of their best offensive performances of the season, the D-Braves avoided the sweep by the Kingsport Mets with the win, 8-1.

With the victory, Danville remains in the Wild Card spot in the Appalachian League East at 31-30, while the Mets are out of contention at 26-33.

The Mets finally got on the board in the fourth, thanks to a single by right fielder John Semel, but the run would go as unearned, as the runner, center fielder ZeErika McQueen, had reached second on an error.

Leaving the game after the fifth, Marshall had given up the lone run on three hits, and had struck out six batters.

Needing some help after being railroaded by Kingsport pitching the past two nights, the D-Braves got just what they needed from their offense tonight - starting with a two-run homer by first baseman Alberto Odreman in the second inning.

The shot marked only his second on the season.

But the Braves were not done yet, and tacked on three more in the third and one in the fourth to put themselves at a comfortable 6-1 lead.

The third-inning damage came on an RBI triple by second baseman Elmer Reyes, an RBI single by catcher Evan Gattis a batter later, and an RBI ground out by designated hitter Ryan Delgado during the very next at bat.

With Marshall still in control, the Braves added their fourth-inning mark as Reyes struck again with a single to right field that allowed right fielder Jakob Dalfonso to score.

Taking over the mound in the sixth, Edigson Mora displayed some of his best stuff tonight, and finished out the game for Danville. In his four complete innings of work, Mora allowed a lone hit and issued a single free pass, while holding the Mets scoreless and striking out four batters.

Single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings rounded out the game for Danville, as a second Brave batter went yard to kick off the home half of the seventh.

Leading off the inning, Delgado wracked up his fifth long ball of the season as he took a fast ball over the left field wall. An RBI ground out by third baseman Barrett Kleinknecht finished the night for the Braves, and a one-two-three inning by the Mets handed Danville an 8-1 victory.

For his first start, Marshall got the win on the night, as Kingsport starter Chase Hutchingson - who is also new to the rotation - took his first loss, after giving up five runs on five hits in three innings. Mora earned his second save of the season for his four innings of excellence as well.

A home run short of the cycle, Reyes was a blazing 5-for-5 tonight, including two doubles, a triple, two RBIs and a run. Shortstop Andrelton Simmons, Odreman and Delgado all finished at 2-for-4, wracking up a combined five runs, and four RBIs.

The thrilling ballgame was not the only attraction at Dan Daniel tonight, as the D-Braves hosted Dan River Middle Back to School Night.

In an effort to help the family of a DRMS student who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia, the Braves participated in a special day at the school - speaking to and having lunch with the kids - and held and special evening for the students at the park. Between raffle tickets, donations and a silent auction, the D-Braves were able to raise $1450 for the family.

Closing the six-game home stand with the victory tonight, Danville now takes to the road for its final regular-season trip of the season.

After playing three in Greeneville and two in Burlington, the Braves will welcome the Royals back to Legion Field for the last two home games of the season on Aug. 30 and 31.

Also featured in the last home stand of the season is Dollar Dog Monday and KRAFT Singles Tuesday Night Tickets - so make sure to cheer on the Braves as they make a push for the playoffs, and enjoy all of these great promotions!

DANVILLE BREAKS LOSING STREAK AGAINST BLUEFIELD

August 23, 2010

DBraves.com

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. - After their longest losing streak of the season, the Danville Braves appear to have righted the ship, taking the first game of their series with the Bluefield Orioles, 4-1. Winning their sixth of seven meetings with Bluefield, the D-Braves improve to 26-24, but remain two and a half games out of first in the Appalachian League East, thanks to a Pulaski win. The Orioles remain at the bottom of the east with a record of 17-33.
The Orioles were the first to get on the board tonight on an RBI single by second baseman Dudley Leonora off of Braves reliever Lucas La Point in the third inning. Right-hander David Filak got the start tonight for Danville, throwing just two innings, and allowing no runs on one hit, with three strike outs.

With a single swing in the top of the fourth, however, the D-Braves jumped in front of the O's, thanks to a two-run blast by catcher Evan Gattis. The home run off of O's starter Jacob Pettit was his third of the season, and at 25, he remains second on the team in RBIs.

After Gattis put two on the board, first baseman Joey Terdoslavich decided to step up to the plate, and put up two of his own. With two on and one out in the top of the sixth, Terdoslavich reached on a force out that scored third baseman Barrett Kleinknecht. Leading 3-1 heading into the ninth, the infielder struck again, this time with a solo homer to right field off of Bluefield closer Dustin Carder.

Leaving the mound after the eighth, La Point threw five shut-out innings, after giving up a single unearned run in the third. By the time he was relieved, the righty had struck out nine Bluefield batters - a personal best on the season - while allowing only three hits. And, with a one, two, three inning by D-Brave closer Nate Russ, the club got their second-straight win, 4-1.

On the hill when Danville nabbed the lead, La Point was awarded his third win of the season, while Russ recorded his first save since joining the roster earlier this month. Pettit took the loss tonight, after throwing for six complete innings, and allowing three runs, though only one was earned, on six hits.

Gattis led the way at the plate for the Braves, going 3-for-4, with a run, homer and two RBIs. Leonora, the only Oriole to put a tally on the board for the club in the ballgame, finished the night at 1-for-4.

Game two between Danville and Bluefield is tomorrow night at 7 p.m., as the two face-off for the eighth time this season. Right-hander Aaron Northcraft will get his ninth start of the season, entering the game with a 5-1 record, and faces off against Bluefield's Jarrett Martin.

After the series comes to a close on Saturday, Aug. 14, the team returns for a quick two-game home stand on Aug. 15-16 against Burlington, in what could be a battle for a spot in the 2010 Appalachian League Playoffs. Featured in this upcoming stand is Dollar Dog Monday. Don't miss out on all of the action here at American Legion Post 325 Field, while enjoying these great promotions!
